A Bouquet ??? A Table Centerpiece ???

I am sitting here looking at my latest creations, wondering if it's a bouquet or a table decoration. At the outset of working on these, I was searching for my own interpretation of a 'Baby Sock Bouquet'. What I have come up with is an entirely different presentation of that concept.   I guess they could serve either purpose, but seriously what do you think?  Bouquet or table centerpieces?

Naturally, because I lean toward incorporating baby clothing items into my designs, I have not used the traditional fillers (artificial flowers and greenery) in either of these models, although it is entirely possible to include them.  Yes, there are diapers in these designs!

Well, what would you label them  -  Bouquet or Table Centerpiece or ...?  I am open to any ideas about these designs.  I am considering offering these for sale.

As always your feedback is welcomed and appreciated.

Monkey Diaper Cake

I decided to add a 'Monkey theme' diaper cake to my portfolio. I started with two different ideas, this is one of them. The second one is still a work in progress, which I hope to be done with soon. I normally only make 4 layer diaper cakes by request, this particular cake seemed to need the added height and extra diapers. I scaled back on a few items in order to keep this cake 'dressed' and affordable.

This is the top of the cake.
Contents:
 90 - Disposable Diapers (size 1)
Your choice - Pampers, Huggies or Luvs

 5 - 'Gerber' Onesies
 size 6-9 months

 3 - 'Gerber' Infant Hats

 4- Pairs Infant Socks

 4 - Receiving Blankets

 2 - 9oz Bottles (Gerber)

 1 - 6 inch Stuffed Monkey

The dimensions of this diaper cake are 26 inches in height and 14 inches in diameter, so it is suitable for use as a baby shower centerpiece.

Please feel free to leave your comments, they are very much appreciated.

BabyCake Sharing

If you want to lift yourself up, lift up someone else.
- Booker T. Washington

The diaper cakes displayed in the photo are my recent donation to a local family support center.

They are also my therapy.
As with each of us, we all have moments when life becomes very focused on our issues, challenges and desires. When I find myself consumed with an inward focus - I create one (or more) of these cake donations.
They represent my way of shifting my thoughts from myself outward. They give me an outlet for the inevitable stresses in my life. They force me to look out at the world and remind myself that I can do something concrete right now that just might help someone else, small as it seems.
These 'babycakes' are always welcomed at the center.  I smile when I drop them off, not because I know that they will supply the new parents with a few necessities instead because they are my symbol that I gave a present to myself - compassion.

Feel free to leave your comments.  Your feedback is appreciated.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Playful Puppies Diaper Cake

Sorry, I've been a little lax posting my diaper cake designs.  Hurricane Irene is projected to keep me in the house for a few days (hopefully, I can catch up).

                                                                                               PLAYFUL PUPPIES DIAPER CAKE

Contents:
70 Luvs (size 1)
3 Receiving Blankets
3 Stuffed Puppies
1  9oz bottle
2 pairs of infant socks
2 washcloths

Priced at $38.00

Lately, my baby shower centerpieces are leaning toward encompassing simplicity, whimsy and economical practicality.  This diaper cake is the result of having a few too many receiving blankets with dogs on them.
I love how it turned out - reminds me of puppies playing in the laundry.

A Barnyard Adventure - Diaper Cake

I have delayed posting  this 'Barnyard Themed' diaper cake, until after the baby shower, just in case the recipient wandered by my page.  This was so much fun for me, let me tell you why.
Kimberlie, my customer was so excited about the impending birth of her nephew that a little of her excitement rubbed off on me. He's a very lucky little boy to have such a great aunt!

This is the front of the cake:
Based on the registry the overall theme was from a children's book 'How Now, Brown Cow' (currently out of print).

Top Layer of Cake:

After receiving the registry info, I happily got started on my shopping spree to gather the necessary items for Kimberlie's diaper cake - oops not only is the book out of print, the blankets for the cake are no longer in stock anywhere. Internet searches and my usual resources turned up nothing that was even vaguely similar to the pattern distributed by the manufacturer (Fisher Price) of the 'Farm Friends' print.

This is when I love this job the most, when I have to stretch myself to meet my customers needs and deliver a product that exceeds their expectations.

Back of the cake:
I could have (and did find) the usual toy cows, cow prints, and 'Got Milk' accessories but I wasn't satisfied with these, furthermore cows are not the only animal in a barnyard. When I discovered these blankets with animal foot prints inspiration hit me and I decided to run with the it. Happily, she loved this baby shower gift for her nephew as much as I loved making it.

As always your feedback is welcomed.

A Family Pause

I've been pretty busy over the last few weeks.  I've had several family events to attend.
First, my granddaughter, Tayrinn had her first dance recital. She was flanked by two overbearing stage parents, but she managed to keep her nervousness to a minimum and performed her dance routines splendidly. According to me, the emergency seamstress/grandmother who traveled 100 miles to fix her costumes 30 minutes before her debut.
Second, my son Kyle, also performed in a musical production 'Show Stoppers - A Night of Broadway's Best' - a benefit program for the Horizons at Radcliffe Creek School. Kyle and children in the 'Inspire Choir' have once again outdone themselves. Kyle even managed to convince someone to give him a starring role and he executed his one (1) line stupendously ( I am so not a stage mom but I will always support his dreams, no matter how tired they make me).
My daughter, Della has also managed to find her stage, she again succeeded in getting an A in her classes as she pursues her Master's Degree in Counselling Psychology (we told her to stop worrying; she didn't listen - I love when I'm right).

As I reflect on these and other family events, I am overwhelmed by how proud I am of these wonderful people that are My Family.  I love you - even when you exhaust me!

p.s.
I managed to get some work done too.  Stay tuned for my latest diaper cakes!

Visual Confections - Baking a Diaper Cake - 2.5 Layers

This 4 piece 'Carter - Pink Kitty' outfit caught my attention because of the combination of colors.  In the past, I have received quite a few orders for diaper cakes with the colors pink and green, so I was kind of drawn to this particular set.  I added two thermal receiving blankets, one in each color for balance or choice, whichever you prefer.

My Comfort Zone - Roses and Barrettes Diaper Cake

I have taken a step back to my comfort zone with this baby shower diaper cake. My inspiration really was the ribbon barrettes with rhinestones.  When I found them in the store I knew that I would be incorporating them into a diaper cake, what I didn't know was how.
As I worked on this cake I smiled fondly remembering the first gift my daughter received from one of her aunts was barrettes and headbands (even though she was born bald). A tradition had been born on that day, my daughter loved to shop for hair ornaments to add to her collection. Over the years, her collection symbolized different stages of her life preschool, kindergarten, middle school, etc; although she lost a few along the way, those first barrettes she received are still a part of her collection and a treasured keepsake.
I love it when a diaper cake makes me smile.

The Undressed Diaper Cake

I have created another cake that I consider traditional. Personally, the cake is adorable even though it seems a little undressed to me.
For me the process of creating a diaper cake involves providing a new mom with a unique baby gift that also includes a few basic necessities for the new baby. I know diapers are a necessity but I like to give the baby something to wear along with the bag of diapers. Producing an exclusive diaper cake and incorporating baby clothes into the cake is something that I thoroughly enjoy so maybe that's why these 'traditional' cakes sometimes feel slightly unclothed to me.
No worries though, they are beautiful and practical, so I'll continue to make them.

Recipe:

*42 Luvs diapers size 3
*22 Luvs diapers size 2
* 1 Carter Receiving Blanket
*1 Stuffed Cat (pink and beige)
*1 Washcloth Lollipop
*4 Barrettes
*1 9oz Bottle
Assorted Ribbon

My Exploration in Traditional Diaper Cakes

For some unknown reason I do not have a basic 'traditional' diaper cake available for viewing on my website. Because I enjoy creating 'customized' diaper cakes, I decided to address this by making one or two and then posting the results here and on my website.
My usual creative process involves  incorporating baby clothes into the design in ways that are unexpected, visible and result in a cake similar to its bakery counterpart - a frosted layer cake. Although, the process is basically the same minus all the tools that I normally use. Here are the results of my experiment.
I like it, even though the diapers are visible and there are no baby clothes. Its Simply Sporty!

This cake includes:
36 disposable diapers (Luvs size 3)
22 disposable diapers (Luvs size 2)
2 Receiving blankest
6 Washcloths
4 Balls (various sports themes)

I think I'll continue to experiment with this design a while longer.
I'm looking forward to your feedback.
